This year our school participated for the first time in the Special Olympics held at Tottenville High School. This event, held every year for children with all disabilities, helps us understand that all children can experience the joy of athletics.
Today, on August 11, 2009, the founder of the Special Olympics, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, died. The first year the Special Olympics were held, in the Summer of 1968, she opened the ceremony with these words: ““The Chicago Special Olympics prove a very fundamental fact, the fact that exceptional children — children with mental retardation — can be exceptional athletes, the fact that through sports they can realize their potential for growth.”
