Fair to inform parents of special-needs students

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Parents of special-needs children can learn about the resources and services available to them at a fair on April 10, 2010.

The third annual Agency Resource Fair, organized by District 75 Parent Coordinators Janet Manolakos from The Hungerford School, Clifton, Zenaida Martinez from PS 25, Pleasant Plains, Donna Cornicelli from PS 37, Great Kills, and Kirsten Rorke from PS 373, New Brighton, will be held at The Hungerford School at The Jerome Parker Campus at 100 Essex Drive (IS 43), New Springville. The event is open to all parents of children with special needs, in District 75 or District 31.

“We wanted to help families on Staten Island, not just our schools, but in the community as well,” Ms. Martinez said.

She said various agencies attending the fair will have tables set up, which parents can visit between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Parents can get information on Medicaid waivers, respite services, support groups, after-school or weekend programs, guardianship and more.

Some of the agencies on hand will be the Social Security Administration, New York Institute on Disability Inc., A Very Special Place Inc., PCCS, Crossroads Unlimited Inc., NAMI, Parent to Parent of NYS, Parent to Parent, Inc., Staten Island Developmental Disabilities Council, GRACE, National Autism Association, SIMH-Safety Net, SIMH Pouch Center, Seamen’s Society Food Card, YMCA Counseling Service, Mercydrive, Inc., Beacon Center for Family Services, CSI, Extended Homecare, Extraordinary Minds Inc., Path Family Center, JCC, Heartshare, CP of NYS, UCP, COSTCO and Metlife.
