Annie’s Journey to America

Join Annie Moore from Ireland as she disembarks an immigrant ship and tells her story of coming to America through music, art, and step dancing. Students and parents will be encouraged to share their cultural traditions and will make a watercolor painting together that illustrates their own family story.

Family Story Book Panels

Parents and students will be introduced to the artistic tradition of mural-making and learn about the history of murals from cave painting to street art.  We will discuss the theme of our mural and design “family story books” that will be used as templates for our mural.

Giant Self Portraits   Friday, April 20, 2012 from 10:50-1:00 p.m.

Parent/student teams will trace the outlines of their bodies onto large paper and paint life-sized self portraits. These large portraits will be cut out and used as templates for the design of the final mural.

Let’s Make a Mural!

Parents and students will take the paper figure and story book templates that were made in the previous two workshops and tape them to the exterior wall of the school on the mural site. Then, we will trace around them to transfer the shapes to the wall.

Join our fun-for-the-whole-family Up4Art weekend art workshops every Saturday & Sunday in February.

  • Feb. 11 & 12 Valentine’s Day Monoprints for your sweetie.
  • Feb. 18 & 19 Collage a Mardi Gras Mask!
  • Feb. 25 & 26 Illustrate the earliest signs of spring using Watercolor Resist techniques.
  • Every Story Time program this February will revolve around literature that was either written, illustrated by or features African-Americans. Hear some old favorites, like The Snowy Day, by Ezra Keats, or introduce your children to new ones, like My Nana and Me, by Irene Smalls or Please Puppy, Please!By Spike and Tonya Lee. To make sure our visitors have time for the full Children’s Museum experience – participate in workshops and explore exhibits – Story Time starts at a different time every day; call ahead to find out today’s story and time.Feraba! On Saturday, February 11, get ready to tap your toes, stomp with your feet, and feel the drums pounding right through your body…it’s Feraba! Fusing West African drumming with rhythmic tap dancing, this exciting music will get you on your feet and moving! Performance at 2 p.m. in Portia’s Playhouse, free with admission.

    Sandy Ground: On Monday, February 20, learn about the Underground Railroad and the history of Staten Island’s Sandy Ground, the oldest community established by free slaves in North America from descendants of the original settlers. Kids will love creating and decorating commemorative doorknob hangers featuring images of heroes of the Underground Railroad.
    Sandy Ground Workshops, Monday, February 20, beginning at 2 p.m. and every half hour until 4:30 p.m. in the Walk-In Workshop.
    Sessions are at 2, 3 and 4 p.m. and are free with regular museum admission.
