May 2008 PTA Meeting Minutes for PS373R

General PTA Meeting

May 28, 2008

On the day of the school carnival, a teacher saw a child with holes in his shoes and bought the child a new pair of shoes.  Ida made a motion to reimburse the teacher for her purchase.  Motion seconded by Kitty.  Motion was passed unanimously.

Cookie Dough Fundraiser:   As we had some complaints about the last product, we taste tested some cookie samples by EZ Fund.com – Chippery cookie dough.  We were not satisfied with this product.  Since Just Fundraising.com uses the same product, we will not be sampling it.  We will sample cookie dough by Classic Cookies and Joe Corbi’s fundraising at the June 6, SLT meeting.  We need to decide on which product we will use for next year’s cookie dough fundraiser.

Kirsten, our parent coordinator shared the tragedy of one of our autistic students.  Her family’s house burned down over the Memorial Day weekend.  Monetary donations as well as clothing and furniture donations are being accepted.  Also, please call Kirsten if you know of an apartment they can rent.

Announcement:  Free forum with Dr Clifford Mevs on Autistic Spectrum Disorders will be held on Wed, 6/18 from 7-9PM at the JCC.  1466 Manor Rd

Call 718 448 9775 for information and reservations for this FREE event!

Autism walk:  6/22 to benefit Autism Speaks.  As of now, 4 parents are walking.  You may contact Kirsten Rorke for more information.

On 5/31, Siri will be doing a charity fundraising walk to benefit the 2 week summer camp for children with disabilities.  If you wish to donate, send check made out to YAI to Siri via PTA.  The DDSO offers 10 scholarships per year.

Treasurer’s Report by Ida Gilman:

Closing Balance:  $4232.67

Hats have been ordered from Special Tees.  They will sell for $5.00.

Motion made by John to change banks to one located closer to our main site- unanimously passed.

PTA is considering the purchase of school T shirts for class trips.  Local business can donate $50-100.00 to put their advertisement on the backs of the shirts.  Kirsten will put together information.

POT LUCK SUPPER:
Thursday, 6/19 the PTA will be hosting a Pot Luck supper at our main site from 6PM to 7:30PM.  Please come and bring a dish if you like!

Overcrowding Update:

It seems we will never get another building, therefore we are now asking the DOE to take down the walls that split our classrooms in half in the mini building, and to restore our classrooms to their original size.  We would like the DOE to then rent space available at St Paul’s Church located nearby.  The pastor of St Paul’s church has sent a letter to offer to rent the space to Joel Klein over a month ago.  We have not heard anything yet.

PTA Elections:

Running unopposed for President: John Scarso

Running unopposed for Treasurer: Jen Walsh

Running unopposed for Recording Secretary: Laura Strohm

Running unopposed for Corresponding Secretary: Perianne Wise

Mike Zangwill will be retiring 6/26/08.
